God of War Previous Editions Recap

The Spartan warrior Kratos, who is sent by the Greek gods to destroy Ares, the god of war, is controlled by the player in the video game God of War. Kratos is eventually revealed to be Ares' former servant, who was duped into killing his own family and now suffers from terrifying dreams.

Kratos is on a homicidal rampage through ancient Athens and other locales to kill the wayward god. He is armed with the Blades of Chaos, a weapon comprised of two daggers linked to chains. The third-person perspective of the action in God of War is comparable to the Tomb Raider series, an adventure game franchise with platforming elements.

Advanced actions like sprinting, jumping, climbing, and swimming are also similar to those in Tomb Raider.

Some of Kratos’s foes can be killed only by either magic or physical attacks, making combat more reliant on skill. Greek mythology powers the story, so players encounter a myriad of Minotaurs and Hydras.

Many years after defeating the Olympian gods,  as 2018's God Of War begins, Kratos has somehow traveled to the realm of the Norse gods. He lives a quiet life in the wilderness with his new wife, Faye, and their son, Atreus. Instead of the Blades Of Chaos, he now wields the magical Leviathan Axe.

Unfortunately, this new life is shattered when Faye dies. Kratos burns her body in a funeral pyre and gathers her ashes. After cremating the body of his second wife, Faye, Kratos is confronted by a stranger with godly powers.

The two battle and Kratos seemingly kills the stranger, after which, Kratos and Atreus begin their journey to honor Faye's last wish: to scatter her ashes at the highest peak in the nine realms.

Along the way, they encounter the kindly Witch of the Woods, who recognizes Kratos as a god, as well as the Huldra Brothers, Brok and Sindri. Do not forget about a living key-chain: Head of Mimir!

Mimir reveals that the witch they met is actually Freya, the estranged wife of Odin, but they leave all that family drama alone. Still trying to get to Jotunheim, Magni and Modi track them down and force them into a fight under Odin’s orders.

During the fight, Atreus rages out, and they kill Magni. This rage, coming from the godly heritage he doesn’t know about, gives him a wicked cough. Freya can’t cure him without a special heart he can only get from Helheim (aka yet another underworld). Also, his Leviathan axe won’t do diddly squat there.

Finallyin Jotunheim, Kratos and Atreus learn that Faye was a giant and that they all seem to be dead. They also see some very disturbing wall art heavily implying Kratos might be in some serious trouble soon.

While scattering the ashes, we learn that Atreus was the name Kratos wanted for his son, but Faye had given him the giant name of Loki. If you know anything about Norse mythology, that’s a big uh-oh right there. Now you know what happened in God of War 2018!
