AD carries are usually the most vulnerable of all the roles. Their kits are often balanced around being glass cannons, hence why they require assistance to get through the early game. However a few lucky marksmen are able to escape the shackles keeping them locked to the botlane. Lucian is one such pick that has managed to succed bot only in his native botlane role but a whole slew of others.

Today I'll tell you how to play Lucian the purifier!

Why Would I Want to Play Lucian?

Compared to other ADC's Lucian is considered a flex pick as he has good matchups in other roles. These include control mages in the mid lane like Orianna and Syndra along with a fighter in the top lane like Gangplank. This is because his kit is better at dueling rather than team fighting in comparison to the typical marksmen. This allows him to shine in both isolated solo lanes like mid and top but also perform well as lane bully in bot lane when paired with the right support.

Lucian's Abilities

Passive: Lightslinger

After casting an ability, Lucian's next basic attack within 3.5 seconds fires an additional shot after 0.25 seconds, which deals 50 - 60% (based on level) physical damage, increased to 100% AD against minions.

The second shot applies on-hit and on-attack effects at 100% effectiveness and is affected by critical strike modifiers.

If Lucian's primary target is killed before the second shot can go off, he automatically shoots another enemy in range.

Q: Piercing Light

Lucian fires a laser in a line in the direction of the target enemy, dealing physical damage to all enemies within.

W: Ardent Blaze

Lucian fires a shot in the target direction that explodes in a cross pattern upon hitting an enemy or reaching the end of its path, dealing magic damage to enemies struck and granting sight of the area for 1 second. Enemies hit are marked for 6 seconds. Lucian gains bonus movement speed for 1 second if he or allied champions damage a marked target.

E: Relentless Pursuit

PASSIVE: Relentless Pursuit's Cooldown reduction icon.png cooldown is reduced by 1 second for each  Lightslinger shot landed, doubled to 2 seconds against enemy champions.

ACTIVE: Lucian dashes in the target direction.

Relentless Pursuit resets Lucian's basic attack timer.

Relentless Pursuit can be cast during The Culling and other abilities can be cast during Relentless Pursuit.

R: The Culling

Lucian channels for up to 3 seconds, rapidly firing shots in the target direction. Each shot deals physical damage to the first enemy hit, doubled against enemy minions.

While channeling, Lucian always faces in the casted direction and is ghosted, and he fires the shots in the target direction from his current position.

The Culling can be recast after 0.75 seconds to end the channel early.

The most common skill path is to take Q at level one, level two take E, level three take W and level six take R. You ideally should max Q followed by E then finally W putting a point in R whenever possible.

Lucian's Build

Pro players tend to favor Kraken slayer as their mythic item.

This item provides critical strike chance, attack damage, and attack speed which are all valuable stats for an ad carry. The bonus true damage on every 3rd hit does wonders against any enemy and is easier to land thanks to his passive.

From here on out, they pick up an Essence Reaver for the cooldown reduction as well as the passive that allows for better sustain mana as Lucian needs to use multiple spell rotations to be effective. The item's sheen passive also synergises rather well with his passive. From there on, it's up to the player:

  • Perhaps a Navori Quick blade for extra ability haste
  • a Mercurial scimitar for its ability to cleanse crowd control,
  • an Infinity Edge for more powerful crits,
  • a Lord Dominik's regards to deal with heavy armor targets,
  •  Bloodthirster for life steal.
  • Even a Guardian angel for the revive passive against assassins and other opponents with strong burst potential.

His boots are usually berserker greaves.

Lucian's Runes

Lucian players tend to run a page similar to the one above.

It makes good use of his kit as his passive makes it easy to trigger Press the attack. The biscuit delivery allows him to sustain and not be forced out of lane in harder matchups or just dominate in easier ones.

The stat runes are attack speed, adaptive force, and then either resistance rune.

Final Thoughts on How to Play Lucian Like a Pro

Lucian may not be a teamfight god like other marksmen however his kit is one of the most fun and rewarding in the entire game.

Mastery of this champion will allow you to be a threat in potentially three different roles in the game. So why not give him a try?
