The mid lane has, for the longest time, one of, if not the most powerful roles in League of legends. This is partly due to its location on the map combined with the large pool of champions that have called it home over the games many years. From mages like Syndra and Orianna to assassins like Zed and Twisted Fate, tanks like Sett and Ornn, ad carries like Varus and Lucian, and even supports like Lulu and Karma.

Twisted Fate has been a part of League of legends since the beginning and is never too far from being a key pick for any mid laner. Let's take a look at what you need to get started playing League's Card Master.

Why Play Twisted Fate?

Twisted Fate's kit has easy to use wave clear, good gank setup, and a reliable way to earn gold. In addition, his ultimate being a semi-global ability allows him to easily move around the map in order to swing any fights in his team's favor.

Twisted Fate's Abilities

Passive: Loaded Dice

Every time Twisted Fate kills an enemy, he gains 1 - 6 gold.

Q: Wild Cards

Twisted Fate unleashes three cards in a cone in the target direction, dealing magic damage to all enemies they pass through.

Enemies can only be damaged once by Wild Cards.

W: Pick a Card

Twisted Fate chooses a magic card from his deck, and uses that for his next attack, causing bonus effects.

Blue Card: This card restores up to 150 mana.

Red Card: This card deals magic damage around the target and slows all enemies hit for 2.5 seconds

Yellow Card:  This card stuns the enemy hit for up to 2 seconds.

E: Stacked Deck

Every 4 attacks, Twisted Fate deals bonus damage. He also gains increased Attack Speed.

R: Destiny/Gate

Destiny: Twisted Fate obtains true sight of all enemy champions for up to 10 seconds.

Gate: Twisted Fate can teleport up to 5500 units away following a 1.5-second channel.

The skill order is at level one take W, level two take Q, level three take E, and finally R at level 6. Then max Q followed by W then finally E putting a point in R whenever possible.

Twisted Fate's Build

Currently, the most popular mythic item on Twisted Fate is Hextech Rocketbolt. It provides Ability power, ability haste, and Health. It also comes with a dash which allows him to reposition or extend the range of his abilities. From there they tend to get a Lich Bane to boost the power of Pick a Card through its sheen passive along with providing a stronger split push power. Depending on the situation they may opt in to either Rapid Firecannon to increase their attack speed along with an occasional boost to their auto-attack (and by extension Pick a card) range. Or they may opt for a more defensive option in Zhonya's Hourglass whose Armor and Magic resist stats combined with a stasis active can sometimes mean the difference between life or death in the late game. Their last item slot but Rabadon's Death cap, Banshee's veil, Void staff, and occasionally Mejai's Soul stealer are typically the way to go.

His choice in footwear is usually Lonian Boots of Lucidity for some extra ability haste, Mercury treads for their tenacity and Magic resist, or Sorcerer's Shoes for their magic penetration.

Twisted Fate's Runes

twisted fate runes 2

Twisted fate pro players tend to prefer these two pages. The first is more for working together with your team as the Unsealed spellbook doesn't come online before level 6 so you essential don't have keystone in the early game. The second is better for those to trade in the early game within their lane by making use of electrocute's damage. Both rune pages run Mininon dematerializer and Cosmic insight. Dematerializer is good for lane manipulation and pushing. Cosmic insight's bonus ability and item haste allows quicker access to powerful spells like Pick a card or for more frequent usage of Zhonya's Hourglass.

Both pages run essentially the same stat runes with attack speed, adaptive force, and either defensive option either armor or magic resist.

Final Thoughts

Twisted Fate doesn't have as complex a kit as some of the others we have looked at but this allows you to focus on improving on macro concepts of the game. His roaming play style may not be for everyone but it undoubtedly is a boon in the right hands. Why not try him out for yourself to see if it could be right for you.
