First, make sure you've constructed a safe animal farm where the chickens can't escape before breeding them.

The next step is that you will need to find two chickens to breed.

With the seeds selected in your hot bar, you will need to feed the seeds to each of the chickens, one at a time.

The game control to use/feed the seeds to the chickens depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right-click on the chickens one at a time.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the chickens one at a time.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right-click on the chickens one at a time.
  • For Education Edition, right-click on the chickens one at a time.

Feeding chickens any form of seed will cause them to go into breeding mode. As you feed the seeds to the chickens, you will see red hearts appear over their heads. Each of these chickens is entering love mode.

Once you have fed both chickens, they will turn to each other and red hearts will continue to appear over their heads. However, since they are the most prevalent seeds, feed them regular wheat seeds to make life easy for yourself.

They will then enter love mode, and a baby chicken will appear shortly after. You will have to wait 5 minutes before your chickens can breed again.
